Treating Your Pet's
Cancer

It's sad how quickly your pet can go from active and healthy,
to weak and suffering when cancer strikes.

That is why it is so important for you to pay close attention to your pet's body and their behavior.  Take the
time and effort to investigate any abnormalities in their body, or changes in their behavior and eating patterns.
Usually their will be signs when something is wrong , and early detection of problems can mean life or death
for your pet.  Most will agree that a little effort is will worth what our pets offer in return, teaching us about
love, improving our emotional and physical health, providing us with unconditional affection and friendship.
If someone you know is facing the tragedy of cancer with their beloved companion, let them know that as with
humans, there are alternative natural treatments that have been proven to be effective with some cancers
when caught early enough. All too often, pet owners "give up " because they don't know there are options.

It is possible to provide a good quality active life for pets that are unfortunate enough to develop cancer. It all
depends on the type of cancer, and at which stage it is detected; of course, the earlier it is identified and
treated, the better.

Common Cancers in Pets:

1.        Lymphoma - are commonly caused by Leukaemia Virus. Vaccination of cats against this common virus
is very effective protection.
2.        Mammary tumours - 96% of mammary lumps are malignant, and they tend mostly to be quite rapid
growing, so surgery is urgent. However, mammary tumours are quite rare in cats because most female cats
are spayed. This is very effective prevention.
3.        Skin tumours -The skin is reasonably visible on pets and, generally, skin tumours are noticed quite
early by owners. Many skin bumps are benign tumours or just cysts, but there are some potentially nasty skin
tumours, so it is always best to have any lump checked by a vet. The vast majority of skin tumours can be
cured surgically if seen early.
4.        Mouth tumours - The tumour is likely to be a fair size. Most vets will check pets' mouths when they see
them for booster vaccinations, or during general examination (except for the difficult pets!) and it would be
hoped that tumours would be spotted then.
5.        Gastrointestinal tumours - Pets tend not to show symptoms until tumours in the intestine are quite
large. Vomiting is often seen with gastric tumours at a fairly early stage, but these are not easy to diagnose
except by endoscopy. Some intestinal tumours do not grow as lumps, but as a general thickening of the
intestine: most patients with this type of disease will have diarrhoea.
6.        Major organ tumours - The liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs, heart, reproductive organs and brain can all
develop tumours. Removal can be difficult, and will depend on detailed assessment of the site and type of
tumour. Animals cannot survive without a liver, heart or brain; one kidney or part of a lung can be removed if
the remaining parts are in good condition. The surgery can be complex.
7.        Tumours in rabbits - The commonest tumours of rabbits are in the uterus of the old doe and in the
mammary gland. Uterine cancers are usually advanced when found and hysterectomy will usually provide
only temporary relief for the rabbit.
8.        Tumours in small furries -Small rodents are particularly prone to cancer. Mammary, skin and thyroid
tumours are common. It has been suggested that one reason is the use of wood shavings or sawdust as
bedding: if the wood has been treated with carcinogenic wood preservatives before milling, these chemicals
build up in the pets.

Did Hoxsey discover the "Cure for Cancer"?

The answer is not a simple one. As to skin cancers, we have no doubt that Hoxsey's topical formula was a
success. Unlike Rene Caisse, Hoxsey didn't hide his formulas. The ingredients in his topical can be found on
page 47 of his book.  Hoxsey's topical formula is in the escharotic category of herbal remedies which has its
own long history of effective use. (In fact, medical authorities were forced to admit in one of Hoxsey's court
proceedings that his topical formulas work successfully -- details which Hoxsey proudly related in Chapter 15
of his book.) Internal cancers are another matter.
We know from the many people who have been to the Hoxsey clinic in Mexico that their internal remedies fail
a large percentage of users. But, like Essiac, should the "Hoxsey formula" be used as a cancer treatment
system? Or as an adjunctive product, taken for its nutraceutical benefits? We would suggest the later.
One note about this formula. Hoxsaic reflects improvements since the time of Hoxsey. On pages 45 and 45,
Hoxsey lists his ingredients as potassium iodine, licorice, red clover, burdock root, stillingia root, barberis
root, poke root, cascara, Aromatic USP 14, prickly ash bark, and buckthorn bark. Some immunosupportive
herbal concentrates (i.e. cat's claw, bladderwrack, sheep sorrel) have been added to Hoxsiac, while the
obvious omission (largely for legal reasons in Canada) is the potassium iodine; buckthorn bark, cascara
sagrada, poke root, and berberis root. (Those with a mind for detail will note that the both the Hoxsey and
essiac formulas contained burdock root and Queen's delight (i.e. stillingia).)
On the issue of the Hoxsey formulae origin, we also take up issue (though it may be of small importance).
Harry Hoxsey attributed their origin to his great grandfather, John Hoxsey, and an incident involving a sick
horse that took place in the Fall of 1840. (Details are provided in Chapter 5 of his book, but not before getting
a short lesson on the Hoxsey family tree.) The "Hoxsey" discovery of 1840 may or may not have happened,
but one thing is clear: the botanical ingredients used by Hoxsey were clearly in use by native American
medicine men at that time. So well documented is this indigenous use that we find it doubtful that Harry
Hoxsey's great grandfather would not have been exposed to a good deal of this knowledge prior to having his
herbal epiphany.
